Description:

The West Virginia State Code states that the boundary lines between the counties of the state are sourced from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (1:24,000 scale) topographic quadrangle maps. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) digitized county boundary lines off of USGS 1:24,000-scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRG, scanned topographic maps), and published the "24k" county boundary in January 2002.

County boundary lines rarely change, and any changes made will be only as a result of court orders or similar actions by similar authorities. The Circuit Court of Lincoln County handed down such an order in April of 2016. A formerly straight portion of the boundary between Lincoln and Logan counties near Harts, WV now follows the low water mark of the Guyandotte River between 38.007447 N, 82.071527 W, and 38.009450 N, 82.064067 W.

The WVGISTC revised the Lincoln / Logan GIS boundary features in 2022 according to the court order of 2016 and including the two reference points stated in the order. The WVGISTC also reviewed the boundaries of all 55 WV counties and corrected areas of significant deviation from the "24K" DRG boundary lines.

The boundary line between Boone and Logan counties was revised in accordance with Civil Action No. 22-C-115 in the Circuit Court of Logan County dated November 2nd, 2022. This agreement specifies that the boundary line follows geographic ridge lines surrounding the headwaters of Missouri Fork and county route 9/2, Missouri Fork Road. The West Virginia GIS Technical Center provided support for implementing the change in the official county boundary map for West Virginia, and submitted the revised map to the U.S. Census Bureau Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) in January 2023.
