Service Description: These dataset is a 9 meter cell size representation of land use/land cover (LULC) for the state of West Virginia relative to growing season 2011 conditions. These data were produced using an object-based image analysis methodology in which basic land cover classes were extracted from 2011, 1 meter cell size, 4 band, uncompressed National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) orthophotography. The state was processed in pieces then merged for a statewide dataset. We found that it was difficult to accurately extract the extent of open water. As a result, the open water polygon data digitized from the 2003 West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board leaf-off, two foot imagery were merged with the extracted data. We then masked the extent to the 1:24,000 scale boundary for West Virginia.
The following classes were obtained: 1: Forested/Woody 2: Grass/Herbaceous 3: Barren/Non-Vegetated 4: Open Water In order to obtain additional classes, ancillary datasets were combined with the extracted cover. We made use of Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) permits from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and surface mine disturbance extents from The West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey to obtain mining extents for SMCRA and pre-SMCRA mining. We made use of National Wetland Inventory (NWI) data to obtain the extent of wetlands. These polygon extents were edited at the Natural Resource Analysis Center (NRAC) at West Virginia University (WVU) against recent orthophotography. Roads were obtained from the 2011 census data. The following classes were obtained: 1: Forested 2: Grasslands/Pastureland/Agricultural Land 3: Barren/Developed 4: Open Water 5: Mine Grass 6: Mine Barren 7: Forested in SMCRA Permit 8: Pre-SMCRA Grass 9: Pre-SMCRA Barren 10: Pre-SMCRA Forested 11: Herbaceous Wetlands 12: Woody Wetlands 25: Census Roads 2011
